Dave's Dime Week 5: Thursday Night Game and Some Poker Stuff

Dave's Dime
"Because Two Cents Just Isn't Enough"
www.davesdime.com

This will hopefully be the only time this season that I don't get the whole Dime out on Thursday. Had a few extra articles from work dropped on me this morning and am seeing the Stanley Cup(!) with my family early this evening.

So here is my pick for tonight. And, if you have any interest, a poker video and article on my good friend Jeff Platt, who made a deep run in the WSOP this summer and was on ESPN's coverage on Sunday!

The video is a must watch, even if you know nothing about poker. Fun, exciting, and my lumberjack playoff beard even gets some screen time!

I wrote an article on the whole experience as well. This won't be for everyone, but for the 4-5 of you that like my work, you might enjoy it! Maybe bookmark it for a rainy day.

Planning on getting the full Dime out tomorrow. Thanks for the patience!

THE PICKS

($) - Indicates a "Pick", which is a side that I feel strongly about
(/) - Indicates a "Lean", which is the side that I'm leaning towards
(?) - Indicates a "Coin Flip", where I don't have much of an opinion
* - Indicates Outright Upset Pick

THURSDAY

(?) Minnesota (+7.5) @ Green Bay (-7.5)
It's strange... nothing about this game suggests to me that it should be anything other than a double-digit win for the Packers. Sure, Minnesota won big against Atlanta last week, but on the road against Green Bay with an injured Teddy Bridgewater or Christian Ponder under center and no running game? What do the Packers have to be afraid of? And yet, I find myself heavily gravitating towards taking the points, but I wouldn't because I don't have any logical or emotional factors backing that decision. So I think I'd just stay away from the game entirely if I had the choice - but the Dime must go on regardless of how unappealing the matchup is! Brain trumps heart on this coin flip.
PICK WITH THE SPREAD: Green Bay
PICK WITHOUT THE SPREAD: Green Bay

Pair of AL playoff series begin; here’s the betting scoop

OCTOBER 2014    Sporting News Linemakers Archive

Pair of AL playoff series begin; here's the betting scoop

@TheLinemakers

The MLB playoffs begin in earnest tonight, as we’re past the wild-card round and the two American League division series get underway.

We now have four World Series co-favorites, as the Angels have been adjusted to 9-to-2 odds at the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook, joining the Dodgers, Tigers and Nationals atop the futures board.

In Game 1 against the Royals tonight (9:07 p.m. ET, TBS), L.A. is the -170 favorite at William Hill, which offers Kansas City as the +155 underdog.  The Angels are -180 at the South Point to win the series, down from an opening price of -200.

Series lean: The Linemakers on Sporting News' Kenny White likes the Angels to advance easily through this stage, and their price is dropping, while Micah Roberts – based on the fantastic Septembers by Yordano Ventura, Jeremy Guthrie and James Shields – isn’t so sure.  However, Roberts still has the Angels advancing to the World Series, which currently pays 9-to-5 odds.

Game 1 lean: This is a bad spot for Royals pitcher Jason Vargas.  In September, he fooled no one, as his 6.57 ERA attests.  Kansas City lost his final four starts, and he was the weak link to a postseason bid.  His resume is also muddied by two starts against the Angels this season, where he gave up seven runs over 10 1/3 innings. Weaver should get the win here.

More odds and analysis: Game 1 betting preview

Earlier, Detroit's Max Scherzer is a -115 favorite on the road against the Orioles’ Chris Tillman (5:37 p.m. ET, TBS).   The Tigers are -150 at the Golden Nugget to win the series, with the O’s getting back odds of +130.

Series lean: The Linemakers' White likes the Tigers to advance based on their starting pitching edge and Baltimore being without Chris Davis, Manny Machado and Matt Wieters, while Micah Roberts thinks the underrated Orioles pitching staff will surprise like it did throughout the critical month of September. Buck Showalter is owed some championship love, according to Roberts, who notes Joe Torre took Showalter’s players to titles in the Bronx and Bob Brenly took his Arizona club to a title 2001. We’re split here.

Game 1 lean: The only game the Orioles beat Detroit this season was on April 6, when Tillman beat Justin Verlander, 3-1. Tillman is 3-0 against Detroit in six career starts. Scherzer didn’t face the Orioles this season, but the Tigers won his last five starts. Money has moved the Tigers from a -124 favorite at the South Point down to -113.  Kenny White likes Detroit in the series opener, while Roberts is giving the home team the edge.  So we're split here, as we are with the series.

Line of the day

“ When a total for a football game reaches 80, it deserves 'line of the day' status, and that's exactly what's happened for tonight's expected shootout between Arizona and Oregon. ”
