Dolphins visit Jets, look to keep cashing tickets

@TheLinemakers

The Jets will be coming full circle at quarterback when they host the Dolphins at MetLife Stadium on Monday Night Football (8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN).

The Jets got blown out 38-3 by Buffalo last Monday in a game moved to Detroit due to bad weather. They've decided to go back to original starter Geno Smith after Michael Vick got the nod in the last three. It's a surprising move, one possibly made by general manager John Idzik, and not head coach Rex Ryan.

Line: Dolphins -6.5, Total: 42

Line movement: The Dolphins opened between -4 and -4.5 around Las Vegas last Sunday night, but the line's been driven as high as -7. As of the morning of the game, there were -6.5s available for those looking to lay the points, while +7s were there for underdog players. Totals have mostly hovered between 41.5 and 42, with 42.5s appearing as well.

Smith back at quarterback: The Jets' (2-9 SU and 2-8-1 ATS) offense has been pretty bad no matter who has been under center, ranking 30th in the league in scoring (16.1 PPG) and last in passing (173.7 YPG).

It's hard to imagine the Jets opening up the offense this week with Smith, even with nothing to lose and Miami hurting at cornerback, with Cortland Finnegan and backup Jamal Taylor both possibly out. Reserve Will Davis was lost earlier in November.

New York will likely feature its run game (136.5 YPG, ranked fifth) with Chris Ivory and Chris Johnson. Also, Smith also has the ability to break containment on this good Miami pass rush and head downfield.

Miami flying under the radar: The Dolphins (6-5 SU and 7-4 ATS) have played very good football in their last eight games (5-3 SU and 6-2 ATS). Their five wins were by an average margin of 20.2 points, and the three losses by just 3.3 points against tough teams in Green Bay, Detroit and Denver.

Quarterback Ryan Tannehill doesn't throw for a ton of yards, but has 16 touchdowns versus six interceptions in the last eight games, and has had at least a 104.9 rating in five of them.

The Jets rank seventh in the NFL in total defense (324.8 YPG), but can be thrown on and will be without their best defensive player in lineman Muhammad Wilkerson.

The Linemakers' lean: Brian Blessing credits Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin for keeping his team playing hard despite some tough losses this season. He also warns bettors to remember that this is a game between two division rivals, and he doesn't expect the Jets – as poorly as they've played this season – to lay down against the 'Fins. He has a slight lean to the Jets, but really likes this contest to stay UNDER the total. Richie Baccellieri agrees with the UNDER, but explains that the team that has covered has also won in each of the last eight meetings. He doesn't like the Jets to win or cover, and will instead lay the points with Miami.

Partner pick: Massey-Peabody ("The Quants") have been all over Miami recently, as this is the seventh time in the Dolphins' last eight games they've picked them. The Quants are 5-1 on them during this current stretch. The Massey-Peabody line for tonight is Dolphins -10.5.
