The 2013 bowl season begins with a meeting of two of college football’s best performers against the point spread.
Saturday’s Gildan New Mexico Bowl (2 p.m. ET, ESPN) in Albuquerque pits two teams who would figure to be genuinely happy to be playing in a postseason game at all: favored Washington State, which hasn’t been in a bowl since 2003; and Colorado State, which is making its first postseason appearance since 2006.
As is to be expected from a Mike Leach-coached team, Washington State (6-6 SU, 9-3 ATS) has a strong and persistent passing game. The Cougars are fourth in the nation in passing yards per game (364.5). No team has attempted more passes.
Colorado State (7-6, 9-4 ATS), meanwhile, has very good balance on offense, ranking in the upper third in the nation in rushing and passing yardage. Coach Jim McElwain, like Leach, has led his program to a bowl in just his second year at the school.
