Florida State Opens As Sizable Favorites Over Auburn In BCS Title Game

Florida State, which has won each of its 13 games this season by at least 14 points, opened as an 8.5-point favorite over Auburn in the BCS National Championship Game in lines released by Wynn Las Vegas on Sunday evening. The total is 66.

The first money came in on Auburn, but John Avello, head oddsmaker at the Wynn, said it was too early to call the action significant. He thinks the spread could drop as low as 7 but also rise toward 10 over the next several weeks.

The line has already been adjusted to FSU -8.

“The SEC is the dog in this game, and I think it will be a tremendous game,” Avello said. “We have plenty of time to ride it.

“Auburn, it’s stupid the way they score,” he added, noting the Tigers put up 59 against Missouri in Saturday's SEC title game and at least 30 against six other SEC opponents. “We’re going to see if Florida State can play that type of game, blow-for-blow. They haven’t been in a game like this all year where they have to go back and forth like a prizefight.”

The national title game is set for Monday, Jan. 6 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.

Before Saturday’s conference championship games, however, Avello envisioned FSU laying a bigger number.

“I saw Florida State a little lethargic against Duke,” he said. “Duke had an opportunity to move the ball but dropped a lot of passes. Auburn played a lot of quality games; they were in some real tough games this year.

“I’m trying to find a number where I get some balance.”
