Teams make final run at 2014 win totals

LAS VEGAS -- There is less than a week left in the 2014 MLB regular season, and a number of teams can help bettors who wagered either on or against them cash in a little dough. Here is a look at how a few teams have performed in relation to their win totals posted in Las Vegas ahead of the season.

OVERachievers

BALTIMORE ORIOLES 78 (94-63): One of the easiest winners on the board. Manager Buck Showalter is a genius that gets the most out of his players anywhere. It's not a good idea to doubt him in any season.

KANSAS CITY ROYALS 79.5 (86-71): Despite low power numbers, their pitching rotation and bullpen has made them into one of the top teams in the game. In a one-game wild card, look out!

CHICAGO CUBS 68.5 (70-88): The future looks bright on the north side, but 2015 expectations are in place now, and the mark is high. Expect a total set at 73.5 next season.

UNDERachievers

BOSTON RED SOX 87.5 (68-89): Who saw this coming? If the loss total was 87.5, you might have gotten 500-to-1 odds on the OVER for the defending World Series champs.

NEW YORK YANKEES 85.5 (81-76): They can still get OVER the total, but it's more likely that the Yankees will have their worst season ever during Derek Jeter's career, "beating" last season's mark of 85 wins.

CINCINNATI REDS 83.5 (73-84): Would former manager Dusty Baker have been good enough for 10 extra wins at this juncture? Possibly, but having Joey Votto out of the lineup also made new manager Bryan Price look worse than he is.

Line of the day

“ The line for tomorrow night's Pac-12 battle continues to see-saw. UCLA opened -3 at The Wynn on Sunday, was bet up to -5 on Tuesday, but is down to -4 at The Wynn and -3.5 elsewhere today. ”
