Bettors not buying Florida State, even at double-digit odds

No one – the selection committee, bookmakers and bettors included – is impressed with Florida State.

The Seminoles may be undefeated, but they continue to escape with narrow victories, and a lack of style points has caused them to slip in the new College Football Playoff rankings . They remain in the all-important top four, but they've been surpassed by TCU for the No. 3 spot.

In Las Vegas, the Westgate SuperBook is offering FSU at a seemingly tantalizing price of 10-to-1, raised from 7-to-1 last week despite a 24-19 win over Florida.

Is the book inviting action on the Seminoles?

"Pretty much, and I'm not getting it," SuperBook oddsmaker Ed Salmons told The Linemakers on Sporting News on Tuesday.

The Seminoles are 3.5-point favorites over a very formidable Georgia Tech team in the ACC Championship Game on Saturday in Charlotte. Should they get past the Yellow Jackets, it's the last time they'll be favored this season, according to Salmons.

"They're gonna be a dog against all these teams left from here in," Salmons said. "If they happen to (beat Georgia Tech) – which the point spread says is certainly no lock – they'd be double-digit dogs to Alabama, close to double-digit dogs against TCU and Baylor."

A bet on FSU to win the title is essentially a bet that it will its next three games in a row. Salmons explained, "You start doing parlays, and you'll be in the 20-to-1 range real quick."

Line of the day

“ After beating the 49ers on Thanksgiving and watching another NFC West foe, the Cardinals, lose in Atlanta, Seattle's odds to repeat as Super Bowl champs were sliced in half at the Westgate, from 10/1 to 5/1. ”
