Early Super Bowl bettors pound the UNDER

@TheLinemakers

LAS VEGAS -- Super Bowl betting action slowed over the weekend, and the latest movement we've seen has been the Westgate SuperBook moving from pick 'em to Patriots -1 on Sunday, joining most of the other books in the city. The other change was a slide on the total, where Aliante and South Point went from 48.5 to 48, and the Westgate from 48 to a Las Vegas-low 47.5.

"All week long they've been taking the 48.5 (UNDER), so finally I just had enough and moved to 48 today," South Point sports book director Bert Osborne told The Linemakers on Sporting News on Monday. "It's no big deal because the public is just going to drive me back in a couple days."

Osborne said action at his book was busy over the weekend, but not for the Super Bowl.

"It was a non-event over the weekend, no rush or urgency from the public on the game or props," he said. "I don't have my daily comparisons from last year in front of me, but it just feels like we're way off from last year's pace."

Nevada sports books set a record for Super Bowl handle last year with $119 million, besting the previous mark of $98.9 million from 2013 by a substantial margin.

"It was kind of a slow weekend, said MGM Resorts sports book hub manager Jeff Stoneback Monday morning, "and we've still got about 2-to-1 action (actual cash) in favor of the Patriots, but since moving to -1 (last Tuesday), our ticket counts are even."

MGM remains at Patriots -1, Stoneback said.

Deflate-gate impact

The switch in public perception by those in the 'undecided category' may help balance things out by the books in light of Deflate-gate.

"I think Deflate-gate has slowed the trend (toward the Patriots) a bit," said Station Casinos VP of race and sports Art Manteris. "Last year the general public not only thought the Broncos were the better team, they also all wanted (Peyton) Manning to win. This year after watching the Patriots destroy the Colts, most thought the Patriots and (Bill) Belichick were unbeatable right now; but nobody outside of hardcore Patriots fans are betting on that side with their hearts.

"That being said, we are still pretty high on the Patriots; but not what I expected after the first 48 hours of wagering."

Another happening on Monday was The Wynn Las Vegas going back to -110 vig after offering 5-cent juice on the Super Bowl for the first week. The Wynn moved to a city-high Patriots -1.5 on Saturday, and book director John Avello didn't get the type of action to put him in line with everyone else, so he's set for the stretch run at Patriots -1.5, still the highest number in town. William Hill and Aliante are still holding ground at pick 'em.

There still is roughly 85 percent of the overall Super Bowl action to come, so this Super Bowl story is just getting started, and we'll have all the updates daily as they happen.
