Danny Garcia comes into Saturday night's fight vs. Lamont Peterson as the substantial favorite in the headliner of NBC's second Premier Boxing Champions telecast (8:30 p.m. ET). The Wynn Las Vegas has Garcia listed as the -425 chalk, with Peterson offered at +325 odds.
While both Garcia (29-0, 17 KOs) and Peterson (33-2-1, 17 KOs) are title-holders in the super lightweight division, Saturday's bout at Barclays Center in Brooklyn will be contested at a catch-weight of 143 and no belt is at stake.
Betting value is on the underdog, according to veteran boxing commentator Bob "The Colonel" Sheridan.
"Danny Garcia is a young, strong fighter, but how much he's been tested is a question in my mind," Sheridan told The Linemakers on Sporting News.
Peterson, Sheridan believes, should not be a 3-to-1 underdog.
"Not in my mind," Sheridan said. "I think Lamont Peterson is a very, very good fighter. The betting line is set up to encourage wagering, and I think by the time this fight goes off, a lot of money will come in on Lamont Peterson, because this is a closer fight (than the odds imply), and it's also a test for Danny. …
"We know that Lamont is a very ring-savvy guy, we know that he's going to have a couple of inches of reach advantage, therefore he (can be effective with) that terrific jab. Danny's kind of the classic-style fighter. It'll be a terrific fight and a great matchup."
If you're looking to wager on this fight – and we imagine you are – Peterson may be worth a shot.
"Get some money on him, I think it's a better buy," said Sheridan. "Danny Garcia could win the fight, but if you're looking for value gambling, jump on Lamont Peterson."
