British Open odds – Jordan Spieth opens as co-favorite to win third straight major

After winning the first two majors of the year, Jordan Spieth has opened as the co-favorite to make it three-for-three. The Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook has posted both Spieth and Rory McIlroy at 5-to-1 odds to win the 2015 British Open next month at St. Andrews. Spieth became the sixth player to win the Masters and U.S. Open in the same season. Tiger Woods is the most recent to have accomplished the feat (2002), and Ben Hogan did it twice (1951, '53). Craig Wood ('42), Arnold Palmer ('60) and Jack Nicklaus ('72) are the others. Hogan, in '53, is the only one to follow it up with a victory in the Open Championship. None of those greats, of course, went on to win the British Open and PGA Championship, and the Westgate prices Spieth at 25-to-1 odds to become the first true Grand Slam winner in golf history (Woods won all four tournaments consecutively for what became known as the Tiger Slam but not in the same calendar year). Dustin Johnson is still getting plenty or respect from oddsmakers despite choking away the U.S. Open this past weekend. Johnson – who missed a 12-foot eagle putt on the 18th hole at Chambers Bay on Sunday that would have vaulted him ahead of Spieth, and then a 3-footer for birdie that would have forced a playoff – opens as the 15-to-1 third betting choice for St. Andrews. For what it's worth, Tiger is listed at 60-to-1 to win his fourth British Open this season.
