Super Bowl odds impacted by 0-2 starts; three SEC teams shoot up college futures

@TheLinemakers

Starting a season 0-2 does not bode well for a team's chances to win the Super Bowl. In fact, since 1990, just 12 percent of NFL teams that lost their first two games have gone on to make the playoffs.

The Colts and Eagles, who each began the season at 8-to-1 odds at the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook to win Super Bowl 50, are winless through two weeks, and their updated prices reflect the difficult situation they're in.  The Ravens, listed ahead of the season at 16-to-1 odds to win it all, have also stumbled to a 0-2 start.

Injuries, especially at quarterback, are another reason for oddsmakers to adjust a team's Super Bowl number.  Cowboys QB Tony Romo broke his collarbone on Sunday, after the team had already lost star wideout Dez Bryant in Week 1. Despite Dallas' 2-0 start, its Super Bowl odds continue to lengthen.

The Packers remain the favorites to win Super Bowl 50, their odds shortened to 3-to-1 after beating the Seahawks on Sunday.  The Patriots, at 5-to-1, are right behind Green Bay.

On the Westgate's college football futures board, three SEC teams made big upward moves after Week 3 wins.

With a win at Alabama, odds for Ole Miss to win the national championship were cut in half, from 20-to-1 to 10-to-1. LSU and Georgia, which handily beat Auburn and South Carolina, respectively, both saw their prices adjusted from 20-to-1 a week ago to 12-to-1 this week. Alabama's odds were lengthened from 8-to-1 to 12-to-1.

Ohio State remains the favorite, but after struggling offensively in a 20-13 win over Northern Illinois, the Buckeyes' price was lengthened from 8-to-5 (+160) to 7-to-4 (+175).

While Urban Meyer has not named a starting quarterback as of delivery of this newsletter, John Avello, head oddsmaker at The Wynn, knows who he'd go with.

"I don't know if the quarterback Ohio State's using right now (Cardale Jones) is the right guy. I think they need to go back to (J.T.) Barrett – he could be a Heisman Trophy (winner).  I would tell the sophomore, 'you're going to be here a long time, you're going to get your playing time.'  But I don't think he's the right guy for the job right now."

Line of the day

“ There's been a 5-point swing in the Eagles-Jets spread at the Westgate, which opened Philly -2.5 Sunday, reopened Jets -1.5 on Tuesday, and has since been pushed to Jets -2.5. ”
