FEBRUARY 2015    Sporting News Linemakers Archive Super Bowl a mixed result for Vegas books By Marcus DiNitto and Micah Roberts, Sporting News @TheLinemakers The Patriots' 28-24 win over the Seahawks in Sunday night's Super Bowl was a mixed bag for Las Vegas sports books, with some reporting a small win and others ending up down for the day. The game resulted in a four-way teaser win for bettors, meaning books had to pay out on all combinations (New England/OVER, New England/UNDER, Seattle/OVER, Seattle/UNDER). The New England/OVER parlay also cashed, the worse-case scenario from some of the bet shops in town. "The worst-case scenario for us was Patriots-to-OVER, but we're still grading all (350) props, and we should show a small profit," Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook vice president Jay Kornegay told The Linemakers on Sporting News on Sunday night. South Point sports book director Bert Osborne said, "We lost on the teasers, and the parlays didn't go well either, but we made enough from the futures, parlay cards and props to show a profit. It was decent day." Overall handle was brisk, according to Kornegay. "We won't set the record for win in the state this year, but based on what we handled here, I could see us setting a record for handle," he said. The record for handle was set last year at $119.4 million. As is their wont, public bettors were on the OVER Sunday night. This time, they got the better of the sharps, most of whom liked the UNDER. The total closed between 47 and 47.5 around Las Vegas by kickoff. The Westgate was the only book in town where Seattle closed as the 1-point favorite. The game was a pick 'em everywhere else. Said Hugh Citron, Stratosphere assistant manager, "We were a small winner on the day, but most of it came from the props and futures. The all-way teaser and Patriots-to-OVER was a back-breaker for us." Tom Brady's three-yard touchdown to Julian Edelman with 2:02 left – combined with Malcolm Brown intercepting Russell Wilson on the goal line with 26 seconds on the clock – sent Patriots backers back to the bet windows to cash their winning tickets. But with action on the sides pretty balanced, the Patriots win weighs rather insignificantly on the books' ledgers. They had more interest on the game staying UNDER and avoiding paying out 13-to-5 odds on parlay wins. "This is the most balanced Super Bowl action on the side I've ever seen since booking the games," said Kornegay. Down for the day The Pats' win had a bigger impact on some books' bottom line than others "We had some huge bets on the Patriots, so the day didn't go so well for us, even after futures and props were factored in," said John Avello at The Wynn, a property that allows its big house players higher betting limits. Avello said he had one seven-figure wager on the Patriots and several others at six figures. Bets of that size minimize the impact of props, parlays and teasers. "We had several six-figure bets on each side, but a few more on the Patriots," he said. With the game tied 14-14 at halftime, the second-half line was also a pick 'em. "The second half didn't help us either. We lost to that as well," Avello said. "We definitely needed that TD for Seattle," said Jason McCormick, sports book director at Station Casinos. "Patriots and OVER was the public's top play." Props butter the books' bread Despite being dinged by teasers and parlays, the intense interest in prop bets means the books are likely to record a small win on Sunday night. "We did okay, but if this was 1985 without the props, we'd be having a rough day," said Osborne, whose books had slightly more New England action on side bets. "We overcame the all-way teaser and also the Patriots to OVER combination." Added Kornegay, "Without props, it would have been a bad day." The nine most popular prop wagers among bettors at William Hill U.S. as of Thursday all lost. Here are the top ten, with odds as of Thursday: -- Will there be a safety? THE INTRO

We did it everyone!

We made it through another year of the Dime without quitting! Meaning, in all likelihood, that it will be back again next year!

Not really sure if that warrants all of the exclamation points, but I digress.

I wanted to get the Dime out in more advance of the big game, but to be quite honest I've been putting it off as long as possible because I have no idea who is going to win this game.

Long-time readers of the Dime should remember the "Consolazio Curse". Without question, I am the unluckiest person on earth when it comes to rooting for a team in the Super Bowl. The team that I have rooted for in the Super Bowl has gone an inconceivable 2-16 over the last 18 years.

As such, betting against the team I'm rooting for might be one of the best bets in all of sports. Hard to find a trend that hits 89% of the time.

I'm rooting for the Seattle Seahawks. So go ahead and stop reading this email and bet the Patriots with the utmost of confidence.

What, you actually care who I think is going to win the game? Well, read on then, I guess.

SUNDAY

This game has me stumped.

My first impulse was that I liked Seattle. The Seahawks have an elite defense, one unlike anything that the Patriots have seen so far this postseason. In the same way that Seattle completely shutdown Denver's amazing offense last year, New England's offense would be shut down this year. The Patriots have been held in check on offense in each of their last two Super Bowl appearances, so why couldn't Seattle do the same?

Then, I shifted to New England. The Patriots have been great on defense of late, and Seattle's offense has become pretty one-dimensional with a depleted wide-receiving core. Even if the Patriots do struggle to score, the Seahawks may struggle as well, especially since New England has the blue print for how to slow them down from the first 55 minutes of the Green Bay game last week. So in what could end up being a defensive battle, don't you like New England to make a few more plays on offense?

But then I came back around to Seattle. Not only am I in love with the defense, but I think New England has been fortunate to avoid an elite running back like Marshawn Lynch this postseason. I do think that this will be a close game that will go right down to the wire, but I actually think it might be Marshawn Lynch and not Tom Brady that is the X-factor that puts his team over the top.

It's silly to talk about motivation or chips on shoulders or anything like that. Every player on the field wants it at this point. It's the Super Bowl. 

I've changed my mind a dozen times and I'm likely to do so again if I don't just hit send, so here we go.
